Can Europe Bounce Back from Defence Cuts?
On 25 September 2012 the Fleishman-Hillard Brussels defence team hosts a roundtable on “The Defence Outlook – 2012 and Beyond. Can Europe bounce back from defence cuts?”
With the signing of the Lisbon Treaty in 2009, supporters of the European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP) had great hopes that the moment had come for European defence. Instead, the financial crisis and severe budget cuts both in Europe and the US have left the transatlantic defence community all but stalled in introspective exercises to re-evaluate capabilities and spending. As EU, NATO and other global powers assess, what is the long-term picture governments and business need to keep in mind?
Gunter Verheugen, a member of Fleishman-Hillard’s International Advisory Board and former European Commissioner for Enterprise and Industry and General Sir Rupert Smith, former Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe NATO, will look at the implications of the financial crisis on the defence and security industry and discuss how Europe needs a long-term defence strategy. FH Brussels’ Senior Vice President and Partner Dan Baxter will moderate.
